SUMMARY:Municipal Election Qualifying Period
DESCRIPTION:The City of Cumming municipal election will be held on Tuesday\, November 7\, 2023. The offices being filled are those of three council members (Posts 3\, 4 and 5). Any person interested in seeking the office of council member must pay a filing fee of $180\, and file a notice of candidacy in the Office of the City Clerk\, 100 Main Street\, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. beginning Monday\, August 21\, 2023\, and concluding on Wednesday\, August 23\, 2023. \nTo qualify as a candidate for the office of council member\, one must be at least 21 years of age\, a resident of the City of Cumming for one year next preceding the date of election (Nov. 7\, 2023)\, and a qualified voter of the City. For the purpose of electing members of the council of the City of Cumming\, there are three council posts currently up for election designated as post numbers 3\, 4\, and 5. Any candidate when qualifying for membership on the council shall designate the post for which he/she is offering. The designation will then be entered upon the ballot and the ballot labeled so that in the election such candidate shall only oppose the other candidates designating that post. \nFor each council member post\, the candidate receiving the highest number of legal votes for the office qualified shall be declared elected. The City Charter expressly provides for plurality vote election\, not majority vote election. \nThe three council members elected on November 7\, 2023 shall hold office for the term of four (4) years beginning January 1\, 2024 and until their successors are elected and qualified.
